I was always that “ermo colle”: rediscovering Leopardi

The mountain that, with its landscape and its songs of rustling leaves and chirping birds, “drowns the thoughts” of one of the most beloved poets in Italian literature, is Mount Tabor. The hill of Recanati.
You can’t think of this small town in the Marche region without evoking the wonderful words of Giacomo Leopardi. A poet born in Recanati in 1798, he was one of the greatest exponents of Italian literature, transcending time with his lyrics and artistic sensibility.
The square from “The Saturday of the Village,” overlooked by Leopardi’s house. The Palace, renovated around the mid-18th century, houses a library of over 20,000 volumes commissioned by his father Monaldo and dedicated “filiis, amicis, civibus.” Inside the building, you can admire rooms furnished with period pieces and wonderful architectural decorations. The museum visit lets you see the poet’s desk, next to the window overlooking the small square and the roofs of Recanati.
Mount Tabor, whose park is home to the World Center of Poetry and Culture, where conventions, seminars, and various cultural events take place.
The National Center for Leopardian Studies was established in 1937 in honor of the great poet.
The Tower of the Solitary Sparrow (La torre del Passero Solitario), part of the Sant’Agostino church and convent complex dating back to the 12th century, is itself rich in history. Various works by Pomarancio, Fanelli, and Damiani are exhibited here, along with the Istrian stone portal designed by Giuliano da Maiano.
If you love art and culture, this small town in the Marche offers even more wonders: the Church of San Vito, which houses a canvas by Pomarancio; the Cathedral of San Flaviano with 15th-century sarcophagi, including that of Pope Gregory XII; the Teatro Persiani, also commissioned by Monaldo Leopardi, which hosted Beniamino Gigli; and the Diocesan Museum in the Old Episcopio with its evocative papal prisons and numerous paintings, sculptures, and sacred furnishings to admire.
